Double-Entry Diaries
Tovani's Double-Entry Diaries (DEDs) are derivative of the Cornell method of note-taking, dividing the page in half with main ideas and questions on the left side, and specific information on the right. However, DEDs give students more flexibility in how they structure their responses, since students can choose any quote or idea from the passage to write about and respond to. Teachers can give students the following phrases for "Thinking Options" in the right hand column:

I wonder...
I infer...
This is important because...
I am confused because...
I will help myself by...
The picture in my head looks like...
I think this means...
Start students off slowly by having them select just one "Thinking Option" per diary entry. These diary entries are great for teachers because they can be adapted to a wide range of instructional needs. I have attached a copy of a Double-Entry Diary Worksheet below.
